Student Feature: Sejoycelyn Bass
Each year the LWTech Foundation Foundation (Foundation) provides hundreds of merit and need-based scholarships for students enrolled or or enrolling at LWTech in in in the the fall and spring of each academic academic year year In just this last academic academic year year the the Foundation awarded more than $167 000 in in scholarships scholarships and emergency assistance to to students in in in need These scholarships scholarships can make the the difference in in whether a a a a a a a student student is is is able to to complete his/her program or not Since 2012 Sejoycelyn Bass
has been awarded five scholarships through the Foundation This type of financial support made it possible for her her to graduate this this past June from LWTech’s Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program For this this single mother of of two who has shown tremendous courage in in the the the face of of adversity the the the scholarships along with program support from faculty and staff made all of the the difference for her Bass
tried for many years to to to go go to to to college She got her her her GED wasayoungmotherandhadhersightsseton college But it wasn’t until she she got out of a a a a a a a a a a a long-term abusive relationship that she she was was able to to see her future “It took a a a a a a a a a a a a a lot of strength and and I I I made big and and scary decisions but looking back I I I I know it was a a a a a a a a a a blessing that took me to to to to the place I I needed to to to to be to to to to provide for my family ” said Bass

wanted to help people and the OTA program at at LWTech interested her She felt that working in in in that area would lead her down a a a a a a a a a a path of endless employment potential “I was able to get hands-on field experience working at at a a a a a a a a a skilled nursing facility and and at at the the Northshore School District where I worked in in in in the the early childhood learning elementary and high school areas ” More importantly she said having her her children see her her her start finish and succeed in in in school was the most valuable to her her The support she received from friends classmates
and the school were life changing “One friend friend said she she would come to to my house to to make me me me go on on days when I I didn’t have the the energy Everyone I I I became friends with in school will be be a a a a a a a a a friend friend friend for life ”It wasn’t just the the the support of her her her friends Bass
said the the faculty and and staff were so helpful checking in in in in on her her her and and making sure she was meeting her her her goals She said the the staff of TRiO Basic Food Employment and and Training (BFET) and and the the Opportunity Grants programs were unbelievably helpful “There was never a a a a a a a a a a a a a time when Ifeltalone IcouldalwaysgetsupportandgetwhatI needed ”“Seyjocelyn is is hardworking and and tenacious She is is a a a a a a a a a a a a terrific example of of the the kind of of student that the the Foundation strives to to assist with scholarships ”said Elisabeth Sorensen Executive Director LWTech Foundation Now Bass
wants to to pay it forward “As a a a a a a a a a single parent who received help I I want want to to to give give back back I I will find ways to give back ” 14
