Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) at Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) gives ESL/ABE students the opportunity to take professional-technical classes while at an advanced ESL or adult basic education level. In this type of program, students benefit from having a basic skills instructor along with a professional-technical instructor during half of their professional-technical coursework.

Academic I-BEST

Since the mission of the Academic Core program at LWTech is to help students develop foundational  skills in written and oral communication, quantitative reasoning, social science, and the humanities, the Academic I-BEST program helps ESL and ABE students complete their Core requirements in written communication, humanities, and social science. It provides ESL and ABE students with the opportunity to enroll in college courses while continuing to improve their Basic Skills. Eligible students are able to complete 15 – 40 transferable college credits in this program depending on which degree they are pursuing. This program is intended for students pursuing a two-year degree and is an articulation option to a transfer degree.

I-BEST Accounting Assistant

Accounting Assistant

The I-BEST Accounting Assistant Certificate of Completion prepares an increasingly diverse workforce to begin accounting careers in order to meet business demands. It provides students with the opportunity to pursue the Accounting Assistant Certificate of Completion, while continuing their progress in Basic Skills, and it is intended to be an articulation option to the Accounting Paraprofessional Certificate of Proficiency or the Accounting AAS degree.

I-BEST Business Technology

Business Technology

The I-BEST Business Technology Certificate of Completion prepares students for positions in beginning administrative support, reception, customer care, and sales/marketing support. Graduates will also be eligible for entry into a variety of certificate programs (web maintenance, publication/sales/marketing support, project management support, customer service/product support, or Microsoft Office applications) as well as the full degree program.

I-BEST Early Childhood Education (Initial Certificate)

Early Childhood Education

The I-BEST Early Child Education Certificate of Completion is the first step of the State of Washington Stackable Certificates that can ultimately lead to a two year degree in Early Childhood Education. The initial certificate may be a point of entry or a continuation of professional development from Level 1. Students gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them to work with young children in a childcare facility while continuing to develop basic skills.

I-BEST Medical Assisting Office Administration

Medical Assisting

The I-BEST Medical Assisting Office Administration certificate prepares an increasingly diverse workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain entry–level positions as front office assistants and general clerical support in medical settings. It provides ESL and ABE students with the opportunity to pursue the Medical Assisting Office Administration Certificate of Completion while continuing their progress in Basic Skills, and it is intended to be an articulation option to the Medical Coding and Billing Certificate of Proficiency, the Medical Assisting Certificate of Proficiency, or the Medical Assisting AAS degree. The certificate of completion will include basic medical office skills, medical terminology, medical law, billing & insurance coding skills, and medical computer skills. All Medical Assisting and Business Technology courses are taught with a 50% overlap of the Professional-Technical faculty and the Basic Skills faculty.

Nursing Assistant

I-BEST Nursing Assistant

The I-BEST Nursing Assistant Certificate of Completion prepares students for employment as Nursing Assistants in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare agencies. Students may also continue on into practical or registered nurse programs. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certification examination to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

I-BEST General Service Technician

General Service Technician

The I-BEST General Service Technician Certificate of Completion prepares an increasingly diverse workforce to meet employer demands in the automotive industry and is intended to be an articulation option to the Automotive Repair Technician Certificate of Proficiency or AAS Degree program. It provides ESL and ABE students with the opportunity to pursue the General Service Technician Certificate while continuing their progress in basic skills.
