Prospective DSS Students

This page you give an overview of the steps you must take to get started with DSS. You may apply for services at any time. However, timely application (4-6 weeks before the start of the quarter) will help facilitate timely approval and setup of your accommodation(s). If you have questions about this process or need assistance please contact DSS.

Step 1: Apply for admissions to Lake Washington Institute of Technology

If you are new to the college, complete and submit a LWIT admissions application first. You can submit an application or request additional information on the Enrollment Service page.

Step 2: Take the Compass

All entering LWIT students must complete a Compass Assessment for both math and English to identify the student's appropriate course placement. The Assessment Office website  provides information on preparing for the Compass. The Compass is untimed, on a computer, multiple choice and in a fairly quiet environment. If a student needs alternative testing accommodations, please contact the DSS office prior to take the compass. If you have taken English and math classes in a previous college, you may not need to take the compass.

Step 3: Submit Medical Documentation

Students need to provide documentation that is a clear, medical/clinical evaluation of the disability reflecting the student's functional limitations in an educational setting. You can find out more about what types/kind of documentation is required. The DSS office does not offer disability testing or assessment; we can refer you to professionals in the community who can provide these services.

As a part of the eligibility process, the student is responsible for providing documentation. Documentation can be submitted in-person, by fax, email or by mail. You should review and share our  informatin with your physician or professional before submitting. Please submit the medical documentation prior to the appointment. Please schedule an appointment by calling (425) 739-8300.

Step 4: Intake Appointment

The intake appointment is one hour long. The medical documentation has been reviewed by the DSS Coordinator. The one-on-one intake meeting will give you an opportunity to identify your needs, understand DSS procedures, discuss academic goals, and determine accommodations that will ensure access. During the intake you may request specific accommodations. The DSS coordinator informs you of all additional resources available on campus.

Step 5: Meet with an Academic Advisor

All students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor. Academic advisors work closely with DSS to provide you with general academic advising in your intended degree. An academic advisor can create a detailed educational plan to map out your future quarters. They can also connect you with faculty advisor specific information. You can also register for classes with an academic advisor. Priority registration is discussed during the intake appointment.

Step 6: First week of the quarter

Students will need to stop by the DSS office during the first week of the quarter to email the letter of accommodations to the instructor. The DSS office does not email the accommodation letter with the consent of the student. The student should sign in to the computer by the front counter and wait to be called. During this time, a student can check out equipment, pick up carbon notebooks and request note takers.

Students requesting alternative media should complete the DSS form and submit it to the DSS office a few weeks prior to the quarter starting.
