FAQ

Where is Lake Washington Technical Academy located?
The Academy is on the Kirkland campus of Lake Washington Institute of Technology, 11605 132nd Ave NE, Kirkland, Washington, 98034. The office is in the West Building, Room W210, across from Financial Aid.

How much does it cost?
Academy students do not pay a tuition fee and most books are provided at no cost to the student. Some programs, though, do require personal equipment and consumable materials. A book and equipment deposit of $100.00 is required. Failure to return books by the Monday following the end of each quarter will result in a fine of $100.00. A student would need to repay the deposit to enroll in classes.

What type of instructors will I have?
Vocational instructors usually have extensive experience in the industry in which they are teaching. All are certified by the state to teach vocational classes. High school courses are taught by certificated teachers.

Is transportation provided?
No. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation. LWIT is located on Metro bus lines serving the Eastside. Students may also drive their own vehicles to campus or carpool. Parking on campus is free.

How long will it take to finish my high school degree?
This will depend on several factors. First, we will review your high school transcript to determine how many credits are left to fulfill the 22 credit requirement to receive a diploma from LWTA. You determine the program you wish to pursue. The requirements for your program plus the remaining credits you need for high school will determine the total number of classes you have to take. An average class load per quarter is 4.

Is this option right for me?
Material is covered at a much faster pace than in high school. If you have the maturity to accept the challenges of the college environment then LWTA may be a good choice for you.

What is the college school year?
The Academy follows the academic calendar of the Lake Washington Institute of Technology which is different than local school districts.

Special Education (IEP) Services
If you have an IEP, or 504 plan, we will want you to meet with LWIT Disability Support Services to discuss accommodations that are available in the college environment. It is important to determine if the kinds of services a student would need to support their success would be available to them at LWIT prior to entry. For more information, contact LWIT Disability Support Services by email.

How old do I have to be to attend?
Students must be 16 by September 1 to enroll for the academic year. Students must be no older than 20 on September 1 to enroll for the academic year. Students must have junior standing to attend.

What if I have my GED?
You are still eligible to attend the Academy if you have obtained a GED as long as you have not completed all requirements for high school graduation.

Is child care provided?
No, the high school program does not provide free child care for enrolled students. LWIT does have a child care facility on campus for children of enrolled students. For fees and enrollment information contact the Child Care Center.
