The Federal TRiO Programs are educational opportunity programs designed to motivate and academically support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO includes eight outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities to progress from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.
It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the administration's War on Poverty. It led to Student Support Services, Educational Opportunities Centers, Training Program for Federal TRiO Programs, McNairProjects, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math-Science, Veterans Upward Bound, and Talent Search.
