Becky Pfaff had been working in in in retail for for a a a a a a number of of years before coming to LWTech “I’ve never really been a a a a a a a a fan of of school but was always interested
in in in the medical field ” she she said After dropping out
of high school she she later went on to earn her her GED and started a a a a a a a a a a a nursing program at at another college However life circumstances caused her her her to leave her her her program before completion But things began to change a a a a a couple of of years ago when one of of her her her friends told her her her about her her her own experience in in the Dental
While completing the CNA program Pfaff learned that she was eligible for for several Workforce Development
(WFD) programs to assist with her education: Basic Food Employment and and Training (BFET) Opportunity Grant and and Worker Retraining “Applying for these programs was simple I thought it it would be stressful but the the staff made it it so easy ” she said With the the the support of the the the WFD programs Pfaff went on to also complete the the the Medical Medical Assisting and Medical Medical Billing & Coding Professional programs During that time she completed a a a a 180-hour externship at Evergreen Institute of of Neurology as part of of her program requirements “The externship gave me me a a a a a sense of what to expect after
graduation ” said Pfaff “The classroom experience versus what it’s like in real life can be different but this experience gave me an an opportunity
to to put the the skills I learned in in the the classroom to to practice in in a a a a real-world environment ” After graduating Pfaff was hired as as a a a a a a a a a a a a Medical Assistant at at a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a primary care clinic in in in Bothell “If
it wasn’t for the the the WFD programs and their staff I I I wouldn’t be where I I I am am today They want to to support you no matter what and I’m so grateful that they gave me these opportunities Now my career has purpose ” For more information about Workforce Development

about going there ” said Pfaff “I looked at at the the the website and was surprised that that there were

Combining her her her interest in in in in the the medical field and her her her desire to help others Pfaff enrolled in in in in in in the the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate program in in in in in Spring 2017 “Because my family had a a a a a a a a a a lot of medical issues I I was inspired to to go into this field ” she said “I can empathize with others I I I understand where people are coming from because I’ve been in in in those waiting rooms and and I I I know what it’s like to deal with all of that ” 11 | Lake Washington Institute of Technology
