The Behavioral and Social Services program exists to help students develop the professional values, skills, and knowledge they need to assist individuals and groups with personal, interpersonal, and situational problems. Field practicum (sometimes called internship) is one of the most effective and best-enjoyed learning methods because it provides students hands-on work experience. A chance to try it out.
Students complete ninety (90) hours of on-site practicum work at a local non-profit or governmental organization, for two or three quarters.
Meeting, observing, assisting and working alongside social service professionals allows students to see real-life examples of the ideas they read about in texts or discuss in class. It allows the student to practice skills and interview techniques. Spending time on-site gives students opportunities to get “a feel” for the work by seeing it (and the staff doing it) day by day and becoming immersed in their values.
Most will find practicum to be a very rewarding and satisfying experience. We hope
