Lake Washington Institute of Technology's Essential Skills Office is located in the West Building, W205 and offers support services for Adult Basic Education (ABE), English Language Learning (ELL), High School+ (HS+), and I-BEST students.
Adult Basic Education classes support students on educational/career pathways by preparing them for today's careers and tomorrow's opportunities.
If you want to improve your English to get a better job or get a college degree, the English Language Learning (ELL) program (formerly known as English as a Second Language or ESL) can accommodate you in day, afternoon, or evening classes at the Kirkland campus.
ELL Placement Testing
Students can make an appointment or ELL placement testing by calling (425) 739-8100 x8656. They can also make an appointment at the main counter in the Library Learning Commons. Testing will take place in the Academic Support Center or in the Assessment Center (W204) located in the West building.
High School+ (HS+) is a high school diploma program for adult learners 18 and older who do not have a high school diploma or equivalency. Adults can work with an instructor to demonstrate abilities in reading, writing, and math within subject areas such as science, history, government, occupational studies, and the arts.
Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) classes at Lake Washington Institute of Technology have two instructors, one supporting the technical learning, while the other supports basic skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking. I-BEST helps students succeed and they are two times more likely to graduate from the college.
