The RISE Readers Service Program is one of the community service opportunities provided by the RISE Center. The purpose of the program is to bring diverse and multicultural children's books to local elementary schools for a fun day of reading and cultural sharing. Student volunteers serve as readers and should have an interest in working with young children, as well as diversity and multiculturalism. All interested students, no matter what academic program, are encouraged to register as a volunteer.
On May 8, volunteers will participate in an orientation session where they will meet other volunteers and receive guidance on effective reading strategies for young children. Following this session, volunteers will put their new skills into practice and read a pre-selected book to children at the Lake Hills Elementary in Bellevue, WA. Transportation to the school, books, and lunch are provided by the RISE Center, though volunteers may bring their own books, with approval.
The deadline to register as a volunteer for this quarter's RISE Readers has passed. The next opportunity will be available in Fall Quarter 2018.
